This place is known for their lobster pasta, but I don't think I have tried it... Or have I? I have tried all their sandwiches and a a few of their pastas and had some amazing tuna and salmon dishes here. This place is really real good. Let me get really real. It's a small place, with great prices. It's not a dimly lit fine wine and dine place. It's very casual and the second most convenient seafood place (aside from senor fish) in the small city of South Pasadena. The employees are very kind and offer great service. When I need a refill they ask me if I want a refill. Don't overlook this place. The end. Vay will take care if you, I guarantee it.

First time here. I wouldn't call it a hole in the wall, but it is on the small side. I tried the Fish Cutlet Sandwich. A fan! I loved the fact that it is a simple sandwich with fish, red onions, tomato, and sauce. The bread tasted fresh and the sandwich was tasty. I was pleasantly surprised :)

If my choice is this or Señor Fish, it's Fish hands down. Ordered trout to go. They took twice as long as they said they would. I was there when they handed it to me (so no hot lights). I got it home (five minutes away) and it was bland and overcooked. With a few undercooked spears of asparagus and mushy broccoli as a side. Never again.

If you want a little hole in the wall casual seafood joint, Fanta-Sea is it. The name is a little cheesy, but the food is pretty good. It's located next to Crown Books and Rite Aid.. a bit hidden if you don't look for it. Ambiance is super casual - a few tables and chairs and food is served with plastic and paper utensils/plates. You order at the counter and pay after you finish your meal. The blue crab tofu sandwich came in a toasty french bread and had a good texture to it. It would've benefitted from more seasoning in the patty, since it tastes bland on its own. That or adding a sauce would be helpful. The king crab pasta was generous. It had large pieces of crab leg with al dente noodles. The broth was creamy but not heavy. The broth had a sweet flavor that I didn't particularly like, but aside, it was a good meal. The scallop pasta was equally generous. Lots of scallops with great noodles. Again, I wasn't too thrilled with the broth (same as the king crab one but w/o the cream?), but overall it was good. All dishes came with a small side salad. Pretty healthy place to eat! Staff was really friendly and helpful. =)

If I could give this restaurant MINUS-10 stars, I really would. We decided to give this restaurant a try because of the positive reviews on Yelp. However, to our disappointment, the service was horrible, the management was the worst we've ever encountered, and the food can only be summed up in 2 words: "BLAND" & "OVERCOOKED". And let me warn you, If you want to have lunch or dinner here, be ready to spend at least 1 hour wait time and be ready to be served last after the manager/owner's friends or frequent customers. We came here on a Saturday night. I told my husband we got there just in time because the remaining 4 tables (there were a total of 9 tables) were all taken within 15 minutes. I really thought this must be a great restaurant because the 2 tables of customers who came in after us appeared to know the owner; I quickly thought they must have frequented this restaurant and that means their food must be good. Boy! Was I so wrong with my presumption. We ordered our food (shrimp pasta and crab cake tofu sandwich and 2 cups of corn chowder) before those 2 tables of customers who came after us, The cook not only took nearly 30 minutes to make us the corn chowder, but we were served after those 2 tables of customers who came after us and appeared to know the owner/main cook/manager!! I mean, they came after us and they got the same corn chowder before us?! Are you serious??! Even then, I still managed to keep my hopes up. So when my husband was upset, I jokingly said, "Well, it's a good sign, that means the soup was made to order." Then I started to hear the main cook/owner/manager kept asking the waiter who took our order which table ordered shrimp pasta, because she's about to make the shrimp pasta. Strange enough, the boy kept on checking the ordering booklet and said Table 9 and Table 1 in Mandarin Chinese. It doesn't take long for anyone to figure out that the cook/manager/owner and the waiter have no idea how to handle a busy restaurant. They couldn't even manage the orders they took! Thus, to make sure they didn't mix up our order, I went up to the waiter who stood behind the counter to reconfirm our order, in Mandarin Chinese; he said, "Yes, you ordered a shrimp pasta and a crab cake tofu sandwich." The main cook/manager/owner overheard me and said, "Yes we are making your order right now." I told them we have a movie to catch. The cook said no problem, she's making our order again. Well, about 5 minutes later, the shrimp pasta was made, However, instead of giving it to me, it again went straight to those 2 tables of customers who came in after us but appeared to know the manager/owner/main cook. I cannot tell you how furious I was. If it weren't for the fact we had no time to wait in another restaurant and we've already waited over 40 minutes in this shxt hole in the wall for a sandwich and a pasta, we would've left. So another 20 minutes went by, my husband finally got his Crab Cake Sandwich. It was one of the worst sandwich we've ever tasted. There was NO CRAB MEAT! All you taste is TOFU!!! It was as bland as a piece of uncooked and smashed tofu. Worst of all, the waiter did his very best to avoid any eye-contact with customers, so we couldn't even ask for salt and pepper! Finally after another 10 minutes (by now, we've waited 1 hours and 10 minutes), my shrimp pasta came to the table. The shrimp was so overcooked that the shell could not be peeled off from the meat. The meat was as tough as tough can be. And yes, another reviewer was right. The pasta is simply the Chinese flour noodle. We called it "Yang-Chun Mien". It's not the Italian pasta. In fact, there's nothing Italian or Japanese or French in the pasta or sandwich we ordered, because Japanese and French don't use Chinese flour noodle "Yang-Chun Mien" in their cuisine. It's just pure Chinese. Don't get fooled. OH! And the broth was salty with LOTS of white pepper in it. This is the very first time I actually regret for not taking negative reviews of a restaurant seriously. Come to think about it, for a restaurant that's been around for over 4-5 years and there's only 58 (including my review), that says a lot about the restaurant I think. Will I ever come back to this restaurant? Hell no! It's not a hole in the wall; it's a badly reviewed restaurant run by a horrible management with the worst wait service and cook and serves nothing but overpriced and overcooked food. And the wait time....you could easily wait up to 30 minutes even for the check after you asked for a check. BUT YES, You might have better luck in getting your food in timely fashion if you are a good buddy with this restaurant's owner or cook; if you don't, you are guaranteed to be the last one to get your food.

** MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT ** They are not kidding when the best food can be found in hole in the wall locations, because this is definitely one of those places. I still remember my slightly raised eyebrows when someone took me here for our first date a few years ago... Tiny restaurant that serve you food and drinks with paper plates, paper cups, and plastic forks. I was a little scared during my first visit. Well, let me warn you, just because they serve some of their food on paper plates with plastic forks, this place is not cheap. I have been dining at this restaurant for over 6 years now. Same staff, same quality of food. My favorite is their LOBSTER PASTA, always creamy and cooked to perfection. I lick my bowl clean everytime I order their lobster pasta! Just thinking about it makes my mouth waters... Other dishes you might want to try is to SALMON PASTA that is a stir-fried with tomato based. Absolutely wonderful too! If you are feeling adventureous and don't know what to order, I guess you can always ask them for recommendation or to surprise you. During my past experience, I have found that they always have dishes that is not listed on their menu or "Specials" Menu.

I love the seared ahi tuna and lobster pasta. I think this place has a great bang for it's buck. lobster pasta: Japanese-french style. Cream of mushroom with linguine noodles, it's not over cooked and just right generous amounts of lobster (half a lobster) and it's absolutely divine it's very flavorful without being over powering/heavy, just my expectations of a french/japanese fusion of taste seared ahi tuna: simple, clean, and delicious it's just a seared ahi (very fresh) with vegetables and their house sauce is absolutely wonderful a combination of spicy and tart

Nothing special... that's my thought on the scallop pasta, at least. I liked the hot noodles, scallions and broth alongside the scallops. But scallops, due to their tender nature, can either hit or miss - and these missed. Overcooked and not that fresh. Shame because I crave scallops and would like to find a place where I don't have to shell out twenty-plus dollars for a delicious dish of them. Can't quite say I'll be back.

OMG..... Y'all gotta bring your family and loved ones in here. Was here about a week ago and I have to say the salmon was fresh, our family shared a mushroom salad wow it was juicy ... Best start to a meal ever warm mushroom with crispy salad and topped with seaweed. I had the lobster pasta it's damn affordable for some lobster. I can't describe all of the dishes we had but one other dish is salmon pasta with sun- dried tomato , a lil spicy a lil sweet it's perfect orgasmic in your mouth. They say moment on your lips forever in your family dinner memories !!!!I'm going back in January see u there foodies make sure to take pictures !!!!!

A little mom and pops asian influenced seafood restaurant tucked in the plaza right next to Rite Aid. The prices are a little high but the quantity of food is ginormous. The scallop pasta had gigantic scallops and plenty of them. Another friend I went with decided to order the Lobster Pasta which was designated with market price on the menu. When the order came out it almost looked like they had cooked an entire lobster inside the pasta. I was just in shock at the amount of lobster that was in this dish. The only thing I could think of was that this dish must be like $40-50 dollars with how much lobster was in the meal. To our complete and absolute surprise the lobster pasta was only $22 : 0 The lobster was actually cooked very well and tasted very fresh. The lobster pasta is definitely a meal that needs to be shared.

The only reason this place doesn't get the full 5 stars for me is because of the very simplistic and low budget location itself. Don't get me wrong, it's maintained very well, is very clean, and you'll have a very comfortable dining experience along with great service. However, you're provided with plastic dinnerware and sometimes paper plates. But on to the food! No complaints at all, and, in fact, I highly recommend trying it. I love their pasta dishes, prepared with various forms of seafood including lobster (delicious!), salmon (yum!), crab (you get the idea), etc. If you're not feeling like seafood, the tri-mushroom pasta is a great option and a favorite amongst my friends and relatives. If you have room, try out the corn chowder as well, although it tends to run out late in the day. If you're looking for a low-key, delicious dining experience, this is a great place and you're sure to walk away with a very happy stomach!

Another bookmark off the list! Fanta-Sea Grill is a wonderful small eatery located in South Pasadena that serves up seafood dishes. It's located inside the same plaza as Rite-Aid & the now dead Crown Books on Mission & Fair Oaks. The menu is very simple with Pasta, Sandwiches, Salads, and Fresh Fish being served. Because it is seafood, the prices fluctuate with the market for some of the top items such as the Lobster Pasta, and speaking of the Lobster Pasta, that is what I had today :) I think the Lobster Pasta is influenced by Japanese flavors. The broth with it's milky consistency reminds me of having ramen. This one happen to be lobster and mushroom flavored and it was sooooooo good! The Lobster that came with the dish was half of the body + a very very large claw. I'm not sure what type of Lobster they use, but they don't skimp out on providing it to you which is a plus! Other little add-ons such as carrots, green onions, and mushrooms made this dish a winner! While this may be nit picky about things, I really had wished that the Lobster meat was actually pulled out and cut up for me already in my pasta rather then in a half a body & a claw form. The dish became finger food like as I had up the Lobster to dig for the meat and try to split it apart into tiny pieces so that I could eat it with the noodles. Other then that, the flavors were jam packed, and served up in a really really large bowl! The damage? $22.00 + tax. It comes with a drink & a small salad (which is nothing special). This item is definitely not one for lunch (unless maybe you share). It's really really large! No joke. I had to go walk off what I had just intaked in Old Town Pasadena because it was THAT FILLING! Other items that my friend has said is good to try here is the Mushroom Salad, and the Tilapia Fillet.

I don't get why there are negative reviews for this restaurant. People expect this place to be some 5 star fancy seafood restaurant because it's located in South Pasadena. My family and I love this restaurant. The owner, Grace is awesome. She's super nice and friendly. As for the food, it's 100% fresh. I totally recommend the lobster pasta but unfortunately they run out pretty quick. As for the taste, it's got an asian fusion to it. I like to kind of describe it as, east meets west seafood grill. I just love the simplicity of this restaurant. What's wrong with eating off of a plastic plate/fork? If you want fine dining, then go to Mortons. If you want friendly service, simple atmosphere, and good tasting/fresh seafood, Fanta Sea Grill is definitely the place to go!

This place is got to be the worst restaurant I have ever been to....I was introduced to this place by my friend who lives in pasadena. It's a hole int he wall place which I enjoy discovering so I was kind of excited to go. I met my friend there for lunch on 2/11/13. The place was small and not very clean. Had bunch of king crab shells on counter looked very old with dust on them. I ordered Lobster Pasta (26 bucks) and my friend ordered off the menu beef dish (25 bucks) The lobster pasta came in a huge white bowl in creamy white sauce. The cream sauce was thin and runny. Worst of all, I have no idea what kind of pasta they were using. It tasted and looked more like chinese style noodles. Weird. The pasta was topped off with lots of chopped spring onions which over powered the cream sauce and lobster. I asked for a plate to dispose of shells and they gave me PAPTER PLATES. Charging this kind of money for lunch menu and I get paper plates? My friend ordered cured beef dish marinated in teriyaki sauce. The Beef dish was reminiscent of chinese style on top of some green peppers and onions. It was heated in a oven and the top was scorched. The soy sauce sugar glaze does not taste good when it's scorched on top. yuk. To top it off, I went to use their restroom and it was the pits. I had to navigate through piled card board boxes piled up and was next to their freezer. Is this allowed? I can's believe I'm writing such a negative review about this place. I just wanted to share this other honest Yelp users to stay away from this place. After paying 60 bucks at the counter I felt sick.

Yes, the server/owner or whoever is really nice, but sorry food quality is first and foremost for a restaurant. I swear I'm not snob. I enjoy going to a hole in the wall place, without fancy decor and service, as long as the food is good. The place is like a cafeteria and the food is cafeteria grade. I went around 3pm on a friday, no one was there, which is normal for that time of day. I was starving but didn't want a huge meal, so instead of a $14 entree, I ordered a $6 fish sandwich. It was a very thin fillet of fish in panko, and slathered in oddly and overly seasoned tartar sauce. The side salad of iceberg lettuce it came with was served in a paper bowl (not the problem) and the dressing, I believe, was soba noodle sauce/soup base straight from the bottle. I could be wrong but I just didn't like it. Maybe the entrees taste better, but I'm not going back to try.

Wondering why people give them so many stars. Environment is like a mom and pop restaurant. Nothing fancy but clean! Yes, it has service, to a certain extend! Food quality, okay! Not the best. I had the salmon filet with rice. The salmon was kind of tasteless. I needed to add ketchup and soy sauce to fix it. I liked the vegetable came with the dish, tasty! My hubby had the scallop with pasta, and the seafood corn chowder. The seafood corn chowder was okay - fresh, not too much starch, but too much celery. The pasta was pretty good. There was plenty of scallops and they're big. But that dish was not on the menu. Check their special of the day!

This review, sadly, is not about the food, but about the service. Read on... When we arrived there - myself, my two youngest kids and my 19 yo daughter - the staff was confused as to why we were there, which struck me as funny and sweet, not rude at all. We are, after all, as Anglo-looking as one can get, at least my older daughter and I are (my youngers are half Mexican - Germexicans ;) ). A woman asked if she could help us and I said, "Yes, just lunch, please." and she looked SO surprised, lol! It was funny (if only they knew what I eat, where I eat and my cultural preferences, lol), and she immediately corrected herself and got us a table. A very polite young man came over to us, handed us menus and we ordered drinks....here comes the sad part. My son became ill and we had to leave! And, on top of that, they have a $10 minimum for credit card use. So of course, guess what I had, only? A credit card (I assumed I'd be getting a little more than drinks!), of course! He VERY kindly allowed me to use the card and I tipped the same amount to him - such nice people! What I CAN say, is this place is clean, has a family setting, kind of an Asian diner feel to it. A nice little fish tank for viewing, and the scent from the kitchen was divine! I can't wait to actually EAT there! But they deserved the kudos - service matters and they were just wonderful. My son is fine now, by the way :) I will update when I eat there...hope it's soon...Anyone up for a date?!

This is the worst place that I have come across in a long time, I can't believe how the person behind the counter treated me. My toddler had to go to the rest room really bad so I run into the place and before I walk towards the rest room she stops me and says I have to order before I can use the restroom I told her that I will as soon as my child goes to the restroom, she says no and tells me to order first, I got so upset that I took my son to Rite Aid to use the restroom and will never go back there again. Anyone who has been a parent in my shoes knows exactly how this feels. Boycott the place and let others know that this is how they treat customers with children.

Finally stepped into this place, and ordered the Blue crab tofu burger which came with a side salad. The burger was not small like I thought it would be, and it was very fresh tasting too. For $6 bucks this meal filled me up.

Large, delicious pastas served in huge portions for cheap prices! An Asian place doing fusion style cuisine. Instead of the standard spaghetti or linguine, they use Chinese flat noodles, which gives their pastas nice texture. The seafood (I had the seared ahi) is fresh and great with their home-made wasabi sauce. We also ordered their stewed beef dish, which is basically a tweaked version of traditional Chinese braised beef with really great onions. Overall, I prefer their salads and pastas. Highly Recommend: - Salmon pasta with sun-dried tomatoes: absolutely fabulous!! - Mushroom salad: served warm with plenty of mushrooms. The dressing is a wonderfully infused with sesame oil. - European ice cream dome (my FAVORITE! they said it was imported from Europe. Very light, subtly sweet, and melts in your mouth) Ambiance is like that of a hole-in-the-wall cafeteria, and food is served on disposable plates & utensils. I guess that's what they do to keep the prices down. Although they highlight the fact that everything is made with no MSG and tweaked for health (ex: their creamy wasabi sauce is made of a yogurt base instead of cream, which is healthier), the meal still left me feeling like I had a heavy meal. Probably due to the pasta. Will definitely bring friends here because it's unlike anything else you'll ever have.

Do not come here. Many of their food are not available. Asked lobster pasta which was on their today's special menu but not available. And its overpriced.

Outstanding seafood dishes at reasonable prices. My friend and I got the black bean tilapia, corn chowder and fish sandwich. The fish sandwich would have been hum-drum if the bread was not toasted. The black bean tilapia had just enough flavor and soy sauce but it tasted like a chinese dish. The corn chowder was the best part. It was filled with crab, clams and vegetables and the flavor was excellent. $20 for a seafood meal isn't too bad. I hope in the future, they will offer trout and calamari.

This place is horrible and unprofessional. -The people who work here are not in uniform and chat at length with friends who come into the restaurant. -They serve water and salad using paper cups and plates. The dressing that comes with the salad comes in a plastic container and is absolutely pathetic, a simple ponzu sauce. This is a pathetic and lazy effort at a complimentary salad; they might as well not serve one at all. The corn chowder I had was too watery. The lobster pasta was overpriced at $22, and the lobster was overcooked. The sauce was flavorful but also too watery. The dynamite shrimp was overcooked and not properly de-veined. Even the rice that comes with the dish is not any good. It was dry and not the correct type to eat with a creole inspired dish. This dish was disgusting. I would never come back.

Tucked away in a small shopping center next to Rite-Aid, Fanta-Sea Grill is small, family run restaurant that has a knack for serving fresh seafood dishes. We came in for dinner and tried the dynamite shrimp stew and a shrimp sandwich. The sandwich was served on crusty white french bread and the shrimp was plump and juicy. The dynamite shrimp stew was fresh, spicy and full of tomato-y goodness. We were really satisfied with our meals. Both came with a small side salad. You can tell they take time to cook their food well...but this place is not fancy by any means. It has a small seating area, and you are served with plastic cutlery and paper plates. Not that that's a bad thing. The food is what matters, and the food is GOOD.

I like the food here. Not blow you out of your mind, but good. I've been here several times and I've never been disappointed. My mom actually is old high school friends with the owner, Grace. She's the short one with the Chief Brown Cow haircut and Star Wars Padawan learner ponytail. Really nice though. But yeah, my mom LOVES this place and the first time she brought me here, I got the lobster pasta and now that's all I get. Some tail meat and some claw meat, it's not overcooked and it just soaks up all the flavors from the sauce, which I'll get to in a second. The pasta itself a little chewy, but in a good way. The consistency is a little bit more like a chinese noodle, even though the menu says "linguine" So the sauce... diced tomatoes, sauteed sliced mushrooms in a light cream sauce. The sauce is more on the brothy side, which tells me they use most likely a seafood stock combo with dairy, instead of all dairy. Which don't get me wrong, I like heavy cream sauces, but especially with something like lobster, you want something a little lighter that won't overpower the meat. Also for lunch, you're not run down by a heavy cream sauce. It's seasoned well, but not overpowering or bland either. I can't tell you about any of the other dishes because like I said, I've only gotten the lobster pasta, but my mom loves the escolar with curry sauce. It comes with a white/brown rice mix and steamed vegetables. Although I just went for lunch right now with my mom and one of her friends (free meal, hahaha) and they ran out of lobster, but one of their daily specials was a king crab pasta, which was exactly the same as the lobster pasta. The crab was also cooked very well and also soaked up all the flavors of the sauce. They gave me almost half a crab, with 3 or 4 leg sements and a nice chunk of the body where all the succulent *drool* lump meat is. They cracked the shells for you so it's easy to dig it out. Just remember to ask for a small plate so you have a place to put your shells. I gave my mom a piece of crab and she liked it too.

Okay we are picky eaters and this place knocked our socks off!! The food is beyond excellent and the casual atmosphere made it more enjoyable. We started with the Seafood Corn Chowder unbelievable you can see the care and time it took to make it from scratch. I had the Lobster Pasta, you will just thought you died and went to heaven...my husband had the Ahi-Tuna Steak perfectly seared and melted in your mouth. Trust us you will not be disappointed...enjoy!!

I am not a shellfish/crustacean person. Seriously, I'm not. I know the majority of you are screaming "blasphemy!" every time I say this, but I'm just not all that into the crab, lobster, shrimp scene. It's not the taste so much, but the texture of the shellfish. Just not that into it. All that being said, I AM IN LOVE WITH FANTA-SEA. I went with my bf and we ordered the blue crab and tofu burger ($5.50), and lobster pasta ($19), to split. Prices aren't bad, no? The burger came on a french roll and honestly I think it is like two burgers, not one. I was pretty filled with just half of that dish. And the taste! The patty was simply delightful to eat. It was panko crusted and fried to perfection, and you could get a crab flavor but the texture of the patty was great! It was no doubt because of the tofu. It came with tartar sauce and lettuce and onion, and was yumminess in every bite! The lobster pasta was a shocker too. It came with a WHOLE lobster - yes, you read right. Granted it was not a humongous lobster, it was still a whole one. Sliced in half for you. What service =). I wasnt too wowed about the lobster itself, but the BROTH that the pasta came in. I think it was their seafood corn chowder that the noodles were soaked in, I'm almost sure of it. It was to DIE for. So freakin good. So unbelievably capital-F-freakin good. I literally drank the broth by itself after the noodles were all gone. I was such a full, happy camper when the meal was done. Now, from someone who proclaims to not like shellfish, this says something about the place, doesn't it?

I was hungry for some quality, affordable, and simple food close to home. After reading the reviews, we decided to give it a try. I had the lobster pasta which was truly fabulous! My husband had the shrimp tempura which was good but he couldn't stop looking at my pasta! The lobster and shrimp were fresh, and even though it's super casual- he got a paper plate in wicker, mine came in a bowl with real utensils, the star of the show as the food. Even though it's casual I'm giving it 5 stars because it is the best food we've had in or close to San Marino since moving here in January. The lady who seated us was super sweet! We'll definitely go back or order take out. Give it a try!

Another hidden gem in South Pasadena. This place is tucked in between a vacant bookstore and an old Rite Aid. There aren't too many decent seafood restaurants nearby that provide a diner/cafe experience in this small yet cozy restaurant.

Good place at good prices. The location and decor is unassuming, but the food is good. My wife loves the lobster / king crab pasta. It is light but very flavorful. I love the tuna fillet or Chilean sea bass. Both are cooked well (light and fluffy), and the sauce is delicious.

I came here the other day to order take-out for 5 people. I needed no-salt, or needed to know what had salt, because we had a very special health/medical restriction in the group. They were very helpful and we were really happy with the order. -Salmon-- had a nice crisp, good healthy veggies on the side -Lobster pasta-- a little rich, but really yummy. -Panko crusted shrimp salad-- very good, I liked the dressing -Mushroom salad--yummy, doesn't even need dressing. Would have liked larger chunks of mushrooms rather than thinly sliced. -White fish with black bean sauce-- a little salty

Great for health nuts and people hitting the gym looking for a clean bulk. This place has left their food light, and healthy. If you're looking for seafood heavily drenched in butter and salt, this is not the place for you. I see some people complaining about the rice - it's a blend of brown rice. I also cook sous vide salmon - this place does not over cook the seafood. It's cooked to a medium (around 130 F prob) which is just right. Again, not for people looking to eat a heavy meal or brown rice. Health conscious people - get on this place!

The first time I came I got the lobster pasta, and I enjoyed it. 2nd time: salmon plate Salad = just bagged lettuce (no tomatoes, no carrots, no nothing) House rice = white rice Salmon = maybe 3 ounces I liked the green beans. Yo, let's get real fanta-sea. You serve a purpose. I love fish, but I don't cook it at home because I don't want to smell it four the next seven days. Step it up, and I'll come every week.

After passing by Fanta Sea Grill for a number of years I decided to invite myself along with some friends. I had my initial concerns about Seafood in a small little cubby hole that never looked packed but always had a few customers. Not to mention in South Pasadena, which the closest beach is 45 minutes away. I understand the decor is minimal and it is not a romantic place to take a date. They serve food on paper and have a basic iceberg lettuce and shoyu vinagerette dressing with their salad. There food is a little pricy. The cheapest item is $6.00 to a lobster pasta that can be $25-$35. So why do I give it 5 stars? The food is very well prepared. The lobster is a generous portion unlike most restaurants. They have a very small staff but they are polite. I have tried their fish and they cook it perfectly. There blue crab and tofu burger comes out in crab cake form and served with tomato, onion and a tartar sauce. The bread was fresh. You can tell the bread was delivered that same day. I have been back a few times and would suggest more people try it out and they might be pleasantly surprised.

Huge let down. Pasta was gross, I mean it was hard to swallow even. The corn chowder was the only thing that was halfway tasty. I'm getting a little nauseous just thinking about our visit here.

Hole in the wall seafood restaurant located next to Rite-Aid on Fair Oaks. Ordered: yelp.com/user_local_phot… *Bay Scallop Pasta ($11): linguini topped with scallops (A LOT), mushrooms, basil and scallions in a white wine broth. Very tasty! Only complaint is the linguini was soft and clumped together... I prefer it al dente. Portion size: HUGE (feeds 2) *Grilled Salmon ($11): served with two pieces of salmon, two zucchinis, two broccoli, two cauliflower, brown rice and two dipping sauces (tartar and a peach colored cream sauce). It was okay, nothing special. The standout was the zucchini, surprise surprise! Portion size: Small *Lobster Pasta ($22): linguini topped with 1/2 a lobster in a creamy sauce. The lobster was cooked perfectly and was so meaty! Portion size: HUGE (feeds 2) Check out the size of the Lobster Claw: yelp.com/user_local_phot… *Seafood Corn Chowder: Pretty good but would've been better if it was creamier. Not a fan of watery chowder (unless it's manhattan). Service: Good Parking: Street

Um I don't know what to say about this place? The environment is really casual but the fish was served on a paper plate.. what... and the food wasn't good. I don't even know why they would pair it with rice it's just strange.

I was on my way to Rite Aid in South Pasadena when I saw that the Fanta Sea Grill was open. I've seen the sign from outside, but I didn't think it was a going concern. A more conspicuous sign that indicates it's open for business would be helpful. I ordered the prawns with veggies. The server said the restaurant cooks the veggies fresh.

Lobster pasta was tasty and msg butter free as advertised. Corn chowder and prawns pasta also worth trying. Chef prepares pasta under strong fire - good fusion style pasta shop. Will be back soon :)

As others have complained, the decor could be upgraded, and you are served your salad in paper bowls... right next to a Rite Aid. Really though, who cares? It's simply decorated, but very clean and inviting. Please believe me when I say that while the restaurant is not beautiful, the food most definitely is. The owner was apparently a fish importer, and then decided that she would open her own place and cut out the middle-person. I had the lobster pasta, which had a large (probably 1 1/4 lbs) shockingly fresh lobster with beautifully cooked, sweet meat. The pasta itself was perfectly al dente, and the cream sauce was very tasty, an interesting mix of Italian, Chinese and Fisherman's Wharf (and somehow worked amazingly well). The wife had Talapia with black bean sauce, which had a wonderful sear and crust, but was still medium rare as she requested. The two bites she let me eat were delicious. The seafood chowder was very good as well, with robust ocean-flavors without being "fishy", a nice, hearty cream finish. To be clear, this is not a first, second, or even third date place. Go elsewhere for romantic ambiance. This is where you go with your significant other or spouse and kids when you want incredibly fresh seafood cooked beautifully without any fuss, and for a very reasonable price. We've definitely found our new go-to place for no-frills, great food.

Came for dinner with the family and had a great experience. I ordered the lobster pasta but they were out, :( so the waiter recommended the Crystal Crab Pasta and it was DELISH! Lots of crab (in shell but cracked) over pasta in a rich creamy broth, a bit messy, but soooooo good! My better half had the jumbo garlic prawns (huge!) and loved it. The kids shared the Tilapia with black bean sauce and veggies and they loved it as well, along with Papi's prawns :) This a very casual place, paper plates and cups, nothing fancy, but everything we had was fresh and so tasty!

This place is nothing Fancy but the food is AWESOME!! the portion is big so 2 dishes feeds 3 people easily. The owner Grace is super nice, she used to be in the seafood importing business so she knows how to pick the highest quality seafood and meats for her restaurant. -lobster pasta: half lobster (very meaty and perfectly prepared) -beef short ribs: hands down the best beef short ribs I've had. The the price is too low for the quality and taste. (it wasn't on the menu so Im not sure how much it costs but it's was just a little over $100 for 4 people!!!) -spicy shrimp in stew: I eat very spicy so I am not a big fan of the not so spicy sauce but the shrimp is very big and juicy. Overall, this place is great, Michelin rated quality and taste. Seriously, the food tastes better than some Michelin rated restaurants out there.

Bland, poorly cooked and served with a bad attitude. I rarely comment on service, but the staff has a lot to learn about hospitality. Maybe I just hit it on a bad day, but it seems to me that they've cut back on both food quality and customer satisfaction.... I had a sad little lunch here and I'll never return!

I came here a couple weeks ago with my dad. He comes often on his own, on the other hand, I haven't been here with him in years. My first impression when I came in was just disappointing. The establishment looked like it had seen better days. Mostly because they were using the visible back corner, where there was a table, for storage. It was a huge eye sore. Really? I guess it's possible they had just put that stuff out there to clean a back room or something, but you would think if that was the case that they would wait until closing. To be honest, it look like that was just their storage space. Anyway, after being beamed in the eye by that blemish, we were greeted cheerfully by the female cashier. She seemed very pleasant and outgoing. She sat us promptly. By the way, this is a small hole in the wall type of restaurant. She got our drinks quickly.... first red flag for me, after working at a restaurant, she started texting on her phone right out in the open. I realize I may be a hard a$$ since this is a laid back place, but for the prices on the "specials" board, I was not impressed. For the prices, to her using her phone with customers in the restaurant and the pile of junk in the corner, I felt like I was in the twilight zone. Then the cooks were talking about smoking, which grossed me out because we just ordered and I'm thinking "ew, please scrub the heck out of your hands". THEN the cashier's friend comes in and she sits down and starts chatting it up with her while my cup needs a refill. More customers come in so she has to get up. The whole time I'm here, I'm just thinking to myself, "am I a tight a$$? Should I really care about what I am seeing?" Regardless I just did. After all the customers had been helped she still sat back down with her friend who was eating lunch at a table. Now the food (LOL): I ordered some sort of mushroom pasta. It was not what I expected, but I am adventurous. I expected it to be more Italian with an Asian twist than an Asian dish with an Italian twist... if that makes any sense. It was meh... but others might really enjoy it. The ingredients seemed to be of decent quality. I think $10 for that dish is overpriced for just having mushrooms. I will probably visit this establishment again because my dad like the fish sandwich, hopefully the service is a little more professional and they have found a new home for the pile up in the corner. Maybe after my next visit I can update the rating.

Hubby and I went last Friday and I had the Lobster Pasta and he had the Dynamite Shrimp Stew. We each got a side salad with a ponzu-like dressing. The iceberg lettuce was crisp and almost sweet. There were a few other leafy greens in them as well. The Lobster Pasta was tasty. The noodles were more Asian-y, than Italian-y. Maybe, because I'm Asian, I liked it. It was soft and a little lighter. There was about half a lobster in my pasta! It was cooked perfectly. The sauce was tasty. Hubby thought I wouldn't be able to finish but it was so tasty that I did. The Dynamite Shrimp Stew was okay. Hubby was expecting it to be thicker. It was almost broth-like. The flavors were strong, but I didn't like it too much. Shrimps were cooked perfectly, were huge and tasty. Rice was served on the side.

We come here on the weekends quite frequently, due to the super lax environment and easy going nature of the owners. I always stick to my usuals though: Mushroom pasta - Super yummy if you love mushrooms like me. It comes in a soup sauce with tomatoes and dry seaweed on top. Tri-Mushroom salad - Pretty delish for a hot/cold salad. It's almost just like the mushroom pasta minus the soup and pasta. Clam pasta (my fav. these days) - Very generous on the clams and also comes in a soup base similar to the mushroom pasta Fish sandwich - I agree with a review below that this sandwich is saved by the fact they toast the bread. Filet mignon - This is sometimes a hit or miss. The last time we had it, it was tender and not too overcooked. Sometimes the meat has too much sauce drenched in it which turns me off. The tiramisu they serve at the end of the meal is a nice touch to a lighthearted meal.

wow this place is unbelievable! This place SUCKS! They overcook all our food and everything was over priced. Its not worth the money -Lobster Pasta- Over cook lobster, pasta was too soft, seasoning was nasty, tasted like butter and water combined. -Jumbo Shrimp stew- Stew had a weird after taste, in fact it tasted bitter, Shrimp was over cook, stew was too thin. -Clam chowder- was too thin and not creamy enough, THERE WAS NO CLAM! -Plastic forks, plates, and dirty cups (WTF) This is not enough restaurant quality. The chefs does not even taste their own cooked foods. The chefs are amateur and lazy in fact when I left this restaurant I FELT CHEATED. This place is such a waste of money and if I can give them a minus 10 stars I would. NEVER EVER COME TO THIS PLACE unless you want to get FOOD POISON like I did.

I would never find this restaurant if I wasn't told that it's in the same plaza as Rite Aid and Crown Books. The place isn't much to look at but service is friendly & food is great. Price is very reasonable, and the portion is big. We tried the Clam Pasta, Tri-mushroom Pasta, and Salmon Pasta - all delicious. The Seafood Corn Chowder is not chunky but flavorful. I can't wait to go back to try the Lobster Pasta.

I have to say i'm not really into healthy food, it's usually healthy because it lacks something important...like flavor but this is quite good. The first time I came, it threw me for a loop because they serve you on paper plates but the food on the plates was good. I like the chowder, it's not my moms and it's not the best I've ever had in a restaurant but it's unique and not a can someone opened and reheated. I was nicely surprised by the garlic shrimp as I expected it to be flat with them not using butter:( but I almost didn't notice. I mean, I'd still rather it be in REAL butter, but it tasted good and I felt like I did my body good. On my second visit I was actually even more happy. This time I opted for Tempura shrimp. They give you a good size serving, as well as various vegetable tempura. The tempura itself was quite subtle, they use pepper to give it some pop and I have to say it's among my favorite tempura ever. They also tend to have daily specials that sound amazing, but that I can't say I've tried. They still serve Chilean Sea Bass here, for a fish that I could swear is on the endangered list an awful lot of places serve it. On this visit they also had clam and lobster pasta which I was dying to try but didn't want to spend that much for lunch. The decor is Chinese mini mall tacky, I was almost shocked they didn't serve me fried rice in a styrophome box but then the prices are quite good for nicely fresh seafood. The name is silly, and not particularly memorable even though they've obviously tried really hard to make it so. I tend to forget it's here as it's hidden away from view but on occasion I remember and stop in for a bite. Still worth searching out for good, moderately priced seafood. Now if I could just get them to use some butter I'd be in heaven. Food - A- Ambience - C- Service - B- Value - A

Like everyone else, I was somewhat disappointed with the food. If it hadn't been hyped up, I probably would've liked it a lot more. The decor is nothing to look at and with a couple of the cooks having a loud conversation, I decided to get the food to go. I had the fish cutlet sandwich (5.50) and a cup of the chowder (2.00.) It was pretty cheap actually. Unfortunately I felt the food could've used more seasoning or herbs or SOMETHING. Good thing I took it home because I threw in some parsley and black pepper into the soup and some garlic salt onto the fish. They both tasted FRESH, just not great. I may come back to try a fish entree but I don't think I'd be ordering either of these again.

(2/12/10, Dinner) The fairly favorable rating on here drew us to Fanta-Sea in South Pasadena. But--we were underwhelmed. Each one of us ordered a different entree: Shrimp Stew, Lobster Pasta, and the Grilled Ahi Tuna. There is no denial that the seafood is fresh, but to our consternation, the flavor is disappointing. The food simply needs more seasoning, marination---anything that spices up the flavor. Situated in an off-center location of a strip mall, the decor of this take-out seafood place is nothing to call home about, but for the prices Fanta-sea charges (averaging $16 per entree), I expect better flavor and more than paper plates.

this is definitely one of those places you go for the food, not for the ambiance. paper plates, plastic cups, awesome food. the mushroom salad is served warm, comes with plenty of a variety of mushrooms, drizzled with this yummy light sauce with sesame oil lobster/crab pasta is AWESOME. i had it the first time i went and it's stayed on my mind ever since. second time i went they ran out of lobster and made it with crab instead. same sauce, same awesomeness. the crap legs come cracked for you already, another plus. i wish it came with more pasta though cuz there was a LOT of sauce left. special short ribs.. this is not on the menu and you should call ahead to reserve some. this is pretty good too, comes with veggies and rice on the side. has an interesting taste that you either like it or you don't i think. i liked it, my friend didn't. garlic prawns looked ok, definitely good sized prawns. also came with veggies and rice. i didn't try it but the plate was polished off. chowder wasn't as thick as i thought it would be but it was decent. dinner came out to be about $100 after tax/tip for 5 people. oh, and we had some lindemans framboise with us and the nice waiter guy had no problem with us drinking it. he even let us borrow the bottle opener and gave us some cups. no charge.

The food here is quite solid: Get: Lobster Pasta. The full order is the best deal. The fish dishes here are fresh and relatively healthy. Pretty good on a summer day here in So Pas! That is all.

I like the food here a lot actually! It's simple, and it's not that expensive (and it's owned by a friend of a friend). It's nothing amazing or out-of-this world, but it's satisfying, tasty, and simple. I like how the pasta isn't swimming with garlic (as most seafood pastas are) and how they include a lot of seafood in there. The crab burger is good too. Granted it's not overfilled with crab meat, it still tastes good and satisfies that small seafood craving. Everything here is served with a salad with really good dressing. Simple decor, simple settings, simple everything. A good hole-in-the wall to visit for some inexpensive seafood.

Have been eating here on random occasion over 5 or more years. Fanta-Sea is consistently good, quick meal in a well-lit, smallish settings with plenty of public parking in the rear of the location. Very informal place, more of a hometown spot. The fresh vegetables accompanying the fresh fish dishes, which are made to order, The two women who own it are on the premises daily to personally oversee every aspect of the food preparation to make sure the quality of the food that is placed on the table fits the same top billing as is their consistent cleanliness rating of "A" by the LA County Health Dept (on unannounced inspections). I have observed the owners and staff recognize many of their patrons by first name.

Hidden gem for sure. The fish is always extremely fresh, healthy, delicious and cheap. A great place for lunch. Lacking in character for sure, so bring your own. My buddy and I bought some cold cahuamas of cerveza at the Rite Aid next door and sucked them down with Fanta Sea's (how come the Chinese are so corny?) with excellent garlic shrimp.

I've been going to Fanta-Sea Grill since they opened many years ago. I use it for one main purpose: My version of fast food. When I don't want to cook and want a healthy dinner quickly, I stop in for the Ahi Tuna Sandwich to go (thus I don't mind the paper plates or the bland decor). If you ask me you can't get a better fast food meal than that sandwich, the small salad it comes with, and maybe also a side of their yummy corn chowder. Okay, a few minutes longer, a bit more expensive, and no drive through. But you can save by skipping a drink for something at home. As for the details of the sandwich: I love the sauce, tomato and onion combo. I prefer when the bread is crunchy (which it usually is), than soft. When they opened they used to have a thicker, pinker, and apparently better cut of tuna, but they may have cut costs a few years back with the thinner more well-cooked piece. But I'm still a big fan and happily satisfied both during and after my meal (which is more than I can say for most fast food).

this is gourmet food wearing fast food attire. this is seafood that you could easily find in upscale restaurants but instead is served on disposable dishwear. its a tiny little place next to rite aid and one of s. pas's best kept secrets. pastas are huge. ive tried just about everything on the menu and its all good..never been disappointed. btw..this is one of ang lee's (director of brokeback mountain) favorite places..his picture is actually on the wall in the corner

This has to do with the attitude of the staff. One night, about a month ago, I was in the Rite-Aid next door, and the restroom there was not usable. (They've let me use it many times before, but there was some kind of problem). I went next door to the "Fanta-Sea Grill," and there were no customers, but the staff were all at a table finishing up a meal. I asked if I could use the restroom, and they said, "Customers only," in a finalistic, cavalier manner. I said I'd never do business with them, and they laughed me out of the place! Great first impression, huh! I love good seafood, but if "Fanta Sea" were the only place within 100 miles, I wouldn't patronize the place.

This is by far one of my favorite eateries. I love the simplicity of the menu and the freshness of the food. The fish is consistently excellent. My favorites are the tuna, trout and salmon. Their fish sandwiches are heavenly and I especially enjoy the way the veggies are served. I recommend the three mushroom salad highly. The prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly and attentive. You really get your money's worth at Fanta Sea Grill!

You get what you pay for, but the paper plates and plastic forks still really throw me off. There are some great deals here, like delicious lobster linguini that isn't overly creamy ($15) and the salmon entree ($8), and awesome three-mushroom salad ($8). The overfried tempura ($8) is not so good and comes with this strange dipping sauce with vinegar. Obviously you don't go here for presentation, but I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow when the diners next to us got seafood corn chowder in a styrofoam bowl and plastic cups for the bottle of wine they brought. Still, I'd come here again for a quick, no-nonsense good meal.

An unexpected great restaurant! Fresh fish, great prices, and well-prepared sides (a good seafood corn chowder and fresh veggies) make this hard-to find small casual restaurant worth the effort. If you want a fancy romantic atmosphere, look elsewhere. But if you're in the mood for fresh seafood in a relaxed, low-key environment, search for this little place next to the Rite-Aid at the corner of Mission and Fair Oaks in South Pasadena.

The Grilled Salmon is very good and I have enjoyed it every time I have eaten here. The veggies that are served with it are always undercooked and not as flavorful as I'd like with the entree.

This place is a hidden gem. When I say hidden..I mean it's really hidden. Who would have thought you could get such yummy and reasonably priced food right next to Rite Aid? The three mushroom salad is a total hit, and the crab and tofu burger tastes really fresh. The meal reminded me of my mom's homecooking, and the service is very humble. This place is a total mom and pop shop and they've been in business for 10 years! This restaurant makes me excited to move over to this side of town :)

I live in San Francisco now and the restaurant I miss most from living in Pasadena is Fanta-Sea. Everything about the place -- the super fresh and expertly prepared fish (Yes the lobster pasta is amazing!), the paper plates, the friendly family who runs the place (used to be in the seafood business, which explains their eye for quality), the super-reasonable prices -- is wonderful, and I take friends and family here when I'm lucky enough to be back in the neighborhood. Rare indeed to find a family restaurant devoted to this kind of quality!

I agree with the other two reviews. BaoBao's Fanta-Sea Grill's food was decent, the decor was spare, and the presentation could've been much better. After reading a rave letter from a satisfied customer that was taped to their window, I was curious. I went in and ordered a Blue Crab Meat and Tofu burger, which was $5.00. The burger comes with tomato, red onion slices, and ginger sauce, according to the menu. That sounded appetizing enough. You can't argue with the prices. Each sandwich comes with a side salad, which is basically Costco spring-mix salad with a small cup of dressing that tasted like soy sauce/vinegar. After I ordered at the counter, I asked to eat in so they said I could sit anywhere and they would bring me my food. The place is pretty bare and basic, which is OK. It's mostly blue painted walls and your table has a vase with flowers in it. They place a paper mat and plastic utensils for you, as well as serve your food in paper bowls/baskets/cups. First, my side salad arrived and I finished it. Then I waited for my burger to be prepared, which took a bit longer. When I say "longer," it means it's a longer wait than fast food service. It's like a sit-down restaurant wait, which is about 10 minutes. That could be a good thing, since they cook to order and don't rush your food. The burger was basically a crab cake with tomatoes and red onions in between a french bread roll. The taste was subtle and crispy. There wasn't a lot of flavor or yummy goodness, but it was clean and edible. Earlier this week, I just had seafood heaven (and for cheap!) at Tacos Baja Ensenada, so I'm having a hard time being subjective here. Overall, there's nothing so special about my Blue Crab Meat and Tofu Burger that would prompt me to rush back here. I took a look at the Specials menu and they had seafood that ranged from $14 to the high $20s. I overheard patrons order it. I left before I could see if they were served with paper plates and plastic utensils, which seemed likely. The restaurant looks and feels like a fast food restaurant, but it has sit-down prices and wait-time. It can cause a little confusion. Do you tip? Do you throw out your own trash when you don't have a tray? I say, when you're served food on paper plates, you do not tip, and when you don't have a tray and multiple plates/bowls/cups, they don't expect you to throw out your own trash. I thought it was overall an average place. The food I had was good enough and it was fresh. They will also only accept credit cards if you order a $10 minimum, which is not unusual. Their hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11:30 am to 9 pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Haven't been here in a while, but S and I recalled it not quite living up to the hype. My sister-in-law's from Vancouver and a seafood connoisseur, and she always raved about the freshness of the fish. Fresh and reasonably-priced it is, but the decor is so antiseptic that eating here is almost something to be endured. It's depressing paying sit-down prices for disposable tableware. One good point is that it's BYOB, and Rite Aid's right across the door. And, there's always a table of regulars who go for unwritten specials -- make sure you ask for what they're having.

I actually really like the food here, and happy with my food every single time! It's not a fancy place, and they use paper plate to keep the food cost down. I some how agree when I was here the first time, I didn't expect good food.. b/c it look like some kindda Chinese fast food place. But I was amazed how good the food was, and the fish is very very fresh!!!! My favorite is the half rare seared tuna... YUM!!! They also do caters, and I once seriously consider using them for my wedding (if I ever have one in the future). It's been awhile since I gone back, which I should go back soon...

3.5 Star, really. Being right next to a drug store, this place obviously lacks any amtosphere. The decor is not much to speak of, either. The service is acceptable but really could be better. The price is a bit high for the whole package. So why 3.5? The fish! I ordered salmon. Granted, the rice and the vegetables that came with it were just OK, but the fish was very tender and flavorful! So I was happy with my food despite all the "so-so's."

Went here with friends and I was quite delightfully suprised at the cheap prices for seafood. I mean the prices were a real steal for lobster and crab pasta. The food here was quite tasty. A little on the heavy side, but you get your money's worth for sure. It is a really small restaurant, and likely you probably haven't heard of it unless someone else told you about it. The decor is as simple as it gets. You're not going to come here for a business transaction, but it's pretty decent food.

  • A Z.

if you want to get full, be satisfied and still feel virtuous, this is the place to go. everything there looks great, but i almost always get the salmon. for ten bucks i get a small salad, a decent size chunk of the freshest salmon in town, some perfectly cooked (but not very seasoned) veggies, and a blend of brown and white rice. plus they serve the fish with two delicious sauces on the side. one is a creamy dill sauce and the other a pretty pink ginger sauce. yes, you eat out of cheap disposable plates with cheap, disposable forks, but the place is clean, the food is good, the service is friendly and the price cannot be beat. in conclusion, if you care more about the ambiance of the restaurant than the quality of food that they serve, go up the road to old town. if not, give this place a shot. you won't be disappointed.

Fresh fresh seafood. We tried the lobster pasta, seafood chowder and salmon which were all very tasty. Their side salad only consisted of lettuce but loved the fact that it was very fresh and the light soy citrus dressing was refreshing. Servers were friendly and attentive. Decor needs work but other than that we would definitely go back and try other dishes.

We have been looking for a reasonably priced and fresh seafood restaurant ever since I moved from Marina del Rey. It has been quite a task considering I have lived in Sierra Madre since 1989. We think that Fanta Sea Grill meets the bill. It's not your usual restaurant in that it serves some of their dishes on paper plates. After talking with the owner's my wife and I found out that the reason they do that is because of space limitations regarding a commercial dishwasher. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The first time we went there (we have been back two other times) I had their special garlic prawns plate it was excellent and the price was $11. There are many good things about this restaurant. Do not be turned off by the fact that it is in a strip mall (in a very nice neighborhood) or that is small with no ambiance. If you are there for good food you will not be disappointed.
